Marc Marquez Seals 93rd Grand Prix Win in Mugello Thriller

Marc Marquez returned to the top of the podium at Mugello for the first time since 2014, overcoming a spirited fight from Francesco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez to secure his 93rd grand prix victory in a dramatic 2025 Italian MotoGP.

The factory Ducati rider, who now further extends his championship lead, was involved in an early lead duel with teammate Bagnaia that had the Italian fans on edge. The action escalated when Alex Marquez surged past both on lap 6, momentarily taking control of the race.

Bagnaia, however, began to show familiar front-end issues that have troubled him all season. Despite drifting wide at corners, he managed to stay within striking distance after Marc re-passed Alex for the lead.

As Marc began to pull away, Fabio di Giannantonio emerged as a late threat. The VR46 Ducati rider showed superior pace and closed in on Bagnaia in the final laps. With a clean move on the penultimate lap, Diggia claimed third and quickly built a gap to seal his place on the podium.

Maverick Vinales was also charging through the field, climbing from sixth to fourth with lap times matching the leaders. However, a reckless re-pass attempt by Franco Morbidelli ended Vinales’ race and earned Morbidelli a long lap penalty. After overshooting the long lap lane and repeating the penalty, Morbidelli eventually crossed the line in seventh.

He was one place behind his VR46 teammate Marco Bezzecchi, who finished sixth on the Aprilia after a consistent ride.

Further back, Gresini rookie Fermin Aldeguer had an early off-track moment, while Enea Bastianini and Johann Zarco both crashed out. Jack Miller retired due to a clutch issue, joining Vinales on the list of DNFs.

Tyre strategy was uniform, with all riders selecting the soft rear compound. Most chose the medium front, except for KTM’s Pedro Acosta, who once again gambled on the hard front tyre.

Rookie Ai Ogura returned to the grid after injury, while Luca Marini remained absent, replaced again by HRC test rider Takaaki Nakagami. Lorenzo Savadori continued as stand-in for injured reigning champion Jorge Martin at Aprilia.

MotoGP action resumes next weekend with the Dutch TT at Assen.
