Marc Marquez Takes Pole as Bagnaia Endures Season-Worst Qualifying in Hungary

Marc Marquez claimed pole position for the 2025 Hungarian MotoGP at Balaton Park, while his Ducati factory team-mate Pecco Bagnaia endured a disastrous qualifying, finishing a season-worst 15th.

Marquez, who had looked strong throughout practice, secured his eighth pole of the season with a best time of 1m36.518s, 0.290s clear of Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, who once again came through Q1 to secure second on the grid. Fabio Di Giannantonio also advanced from Q1 to complete the front row for VR46 Ducati.

KTM’s Pedro Acosta, Friday’s fastest rider, suffered an early crash at Turn 8 in Q2. Although uninjured, he was left with just one bike and could only recover to seventh, behind Tech3’s Enea Bastianini in fourth, VR46’s Franco Morbidelli in fifth, and Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo in sixth.

Further back, Fermin Aldeguer led the Gresini charge in eighth, with Honda’s Luca Marini and Joan Mir locking out the top ten. Alex Marquez managed only 11th and will drop three places for impeding in practice, while stand-in Pol Espargaro crashed late in Q2 but still secured 12th.

Brad Binder narrowly missed out on Q2 despite matching Di Giannantonio’s Q1 lap time, leaving him 13th, with Jack Miller 14th before serving a grid penalty.

The biggest shock came from Pecco Bagnaia, who failed to escape Q1 for the first time this year, continuing to struggle under braking. He starts 15th in the sprint but will be promoted to 13th for Sunday’s grand prix.

Meanwhile, reigning champion Jorge Martin could only manage 17th on his Aprilia as his adaptation struggles continue.
