Marc Marquez Undergoes Shoulder Surgery After Indonesian MotoGP Crash

MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has undergone surgery on his right shoulder following his crash with Marco Bezzecchi during the Indonesian Grand Prix.

The Ducati rider was taken out on the opening lap at Mandalika after Aprilia’s Bezzecchi collided with him at Turn 7, resulting in a heavy fall that left Marquez with a fractured shoulder and ligament damage. The injuries have already ruled him out of the upcoming Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix.

Initially, doctors in Madrid determined that surgery was unnecessary. However, a follow-up examination revealed insufficient progress in the healing process, leading to a change in approach.

A statement from Ducati confirmed: “After a checkup for his right shoulder blade injury, Marc Marquez has undergone a successful operation at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid. The medical team who examined him earlier found that the coracoid fracture and ligament damage were not stabilising properly. To prevent long-term instability, surgical stabilisation and ligament repair were performed. Marquez is now at home continuing his recovery, and his return will depend on his rehabilitation progress.”

With the championship already secured, Marquez is not expected to rush his return and could sit out the remainder of the 2025 season.

After the crash, Marquez called the incident with Bezzecchi a racing accident and urged fans to remain calm on social media amid criticism of the Aprilia rider.

Bezzecchi is expected to meet with FIM stewards in Australia and could face a penalty for his role in the collision. Ducati will name Marquez’s replacement for the Australian round shortly, with a separate substitute to be confirmed for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
