Melandri: Marquez Could Retire After Next Title Due to Physical and Mental Toll

MotoGP race winner Marco Melandri believes Marc Marquez may consider retirement if he secures another world championship in 2026, citing the intense physical and mental demands the Spanish rider has faced in recent seasons.

Marquez, who captured his seventh MotoGP world title last year—drawing level with Valentino Rossi and moving within one of Giacomo Agostini’s all-time record—has started the 2026 campaign as a title favorite. However, the Ducati rider has faced significant challenges in the opening rounds, still seeking his first grand prix podium of the season. Although he has achieved a sprint win and podium, Marquez continues to battle the lingering effects of a shoulder injury sustained in Indonesia last year, while Ducati as a whole has struggled to match Aprilia’s pace in main races.

Recent comments from Andrea Dovizioso have heightened concerns about Marquez’s condition, labeling it “more serious than it seems.” Marquez himself described his situation as “critical” at the US Grand Prix, adding to speculation about his future.

Speaking to GPOne during the Brazilian Grand Prix, Melandri shared his perspective: “More than the injury, I think the mental effort required to win the title back has taken its toll, because in my opinion, he gave more than 110% in 2025. He remains the most well-rounded rider overall, even if he’s perhaps less explosive than last year. He’s still the favorite, but if [Marco] Bezzecchi manages himself well, he could seriously join the fight for the championship.”

Melandri added, “If Marquez were to win the title, he might even decide to retire at the end of the season. That’s how I see it. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were to stop after his 10th grand prix title.”

Marquez’s current contract with Ducati is set to expire at the end of this season, though he is expected to continue with the Italian manufacturer into 2027. Contract announcements across the grid have been delayed as manufacturers and MotoGP management continue negotiations over a new commercial agreement.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Marquez—not only for his title aspirations, but also for any indications about his long-term future in the sport.
