Lionel Messi has been fined an undisclosed amount by MLS’ Disciplinary Committee after grabbing a New York City FC coach by the neck following Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw in their season opener.
Video footage captured Messi approaching the coach and grabbing the back of his neck, prompting a quick reaction from the NYCFC staff member.
Messi’s Inter Miami teammate, Luis Suarez, was also fined for a similar incident during halftime, where he pinched NYCFC defender Birk Risa on the neck.
Miami will now shift their focus to the CONCACAF Champions Cup, where they face Sporting KC later on Tuesday.
