Messi open to 2026 World Cup return, but admits fitness will decide his fate

Lionel Messi has revealed he hopes to represent Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, though he admits his age and fitness will determine whether he can take part.

The 37-year-old superstar, who will turn 39 next June, recently extended his contract with Inter Miami until 2028, showing no signs of retiring yet. Speaking to NBC News, Messi said he will evaluate his condition next year before deciding on his participation in the tournament to be held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

“It’s something extraordinary to be able to play in a World Cup, and I would love to,” said the Argentine captain. “I’ll assess my form during preseason with Inter Miami and decide if I can really be 100 percent and still help my team.”

Messi, who led Argentina to their 2022 World Cup triumph and 2021 Copa America title, described defending the world title as “a dream come true.” He has played 195 matches for Argentina, scoring a record 114 goals — and a return in 2026 would mark his sixth World Cup appearance.
