Premier League to Introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology from April 12

The Premier League will implement semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) for the first time, starting with matches on April 12. The system, which debuted in English football during the FA Cup fifth round in March, has now been approved for top-flight use following extensive non-live testing.

SAOT is designed to enhance the accuracy of offside calls by automating key elements of the decision-making process. It will use virtual offside lines, optical player tracking, and real-time graphics for spectators both in stadiums and at home. VAR officials will verify the system’s accuracy before confirming decisions with the on-field referee.

Originally introduced at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, SAOT has also been used in the Champions League, Serie A, and La Liga. The Premier League developed the system in collaboration with Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) and Genius Sports.

A Premier League statement highlighted that the technology would “improve speed, efficiency, and consistency” while maintaining the integrity of the decision-making process. With 30 cameras installed in each stadium, SAOT will be used for close offside decisions and will either confirm or suggest changes to the referee’s initial call.

The system will make its Premier League debut when Manchester City host Crystal Palace on April 12, followed by Arsenal’s clash with Brentford later that day.
