Rivola praises ‘smart’ Martin after composed Assen MotoGP podium

Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola praised Jorge Martin for delivering a mature and intelligent ride at the Dutch MotoGP, commending the Spaniard’s decision to secure a podium rather than take unnecessary risks.

Rivola, who had publicly criticised Martin following his costly mistake at Balaton Park, was full of praise after the reigning world champion climbed to third place at Assen despite not being at full fitness.

Martin claimed his maiden pole position for Aprilia with a stunning qualifying lap but was unable to match the pace of his fellow RS-GP riders during the races. After finishing fifth in Saturday’s Sprint, he led the early stages of Sunday’s Grand Prix before eventually being caught by Trackhouse teammates Raul Fernandez and Ai Ogura.

Both riders overtook Martin in the closing laps, but Rivola believed the championship leader made the correct decision by settling for a podium finish instead of risking a crash in an attempt to fight back.

“I think Jorge put together a fantastic lap in qualifying to take his first pole position with us,” Rivola said.

“Considering he’s still far from 100% physically after the Balaton Park crash, I think he rode an excellent race.”

Rivola added that Martin showed maturity by recognising his limits and prioritising valuable championship points over an unnecessary gamble, describing it as the smartest approach under the circumstances.

The podium result continues Martin’s strong start with Aprilia and further strengthens his position at the top of the MotoGP championship standings.
