Simeone Urges Atletico to Focus on Champions League Clash Against Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has called on his players to shift their focus to their upcoming Champions League showdown with Real Madrid after securing a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao that temporarily lifted them to the top of LaLiga.

Speaking at a press conference, Simeone emphasized the importance of resting and maintaining concentration ahead of the highly anticipated Madrid derby in the Champions League last-16 first leg.

“We have a big game in the Champions League, and at the moment, we just have to focus on that and get well rested during these three days off,” he said. “What we have to do now is continue strengthening our collective work and not lose focus.”

The Argentine coach also praised substitute Julian Alvarez, who netted the match-winning goal shortly after coming on for Alexander Sorloth in the second half.

“Today we faced a very difficult opponent. They defended well and had some good chances with Nico and Inaki Williams. We were lucky to have Julian in the second half and for him to finish the counter-attack the way he did,” Simeone said.

Alvarez, who arrived from Manchester City, has already made a strong impression at Atletico, with Simeone expressing admiration for his adaptability and humble attitude.

“Sometimes players come in, and you know they are special. They are different, and I like their modesty and versatility,” he added.

Atletico currently sit atop LaLiga with 56 points, two ahead of Barcelona, who face Real Sociedad on Sunday, while third-placed Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat to Real Betis on Saturday.

Despite Atletico’s strong form, Simeone remains cautious about the challenge ahead in the Champions League. The Madrid derby is set to be an intense encounter, and the Argentine tactician is determined to keep his squad grounded and fully prepared.
