Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden is facing uncertainty over his place in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, according to national team manager Thomas Tuchel. Despite having 49 senior caps, Foden has struggled for form, starting only four of Manchester City’s last 15 matches and failing to score in the Premier League since December 14.
Speaking after England’s 1-0 defeat to Japan at Wembley, Tuchel said, “Well, it’s not a guarantee that he will come.” Foden was substituted in the second half, having been handed a central role in the absence of injured captain Harry Kane. However, the Premier League’s 2024 Player of the Season looked unconvincing as a false nine, registering the fewest touches of any England starter.
Tuchel praised Foden’s attitude in training but admitted the midfielder is struggling to make a full impact on the pitch. “He came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training. I thought he would surprise us with his verve and excitement, but he’s finding it hard to have the full impact,” Tuchel added.
With offensive players expected to deliver creativity, dribbling, shots, and assists, Tuchel noted that the team lacked enough attacking output against Japan. The England manager must submit his final squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico by the end of May.
