Victor Lai Makes History: Canada’s First-Ever Super 1000 Champion at Indonesia Open

Canada has a new badminton hero! Victor Lai delivered the country’s biggest-ever podium moment by winning the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026, becoming the first Canadian to capture an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1000 title.

What made Lai’s victory even more remarkable was the stage and his opponent. Playing in front of a passionate, sold-out crowd at Jakarta’s Istora, Lai faced the seasoned Jonatan Christie, who has competed on that court for over a decade. But it was Christie who buckled under the home pressure, while the 21-year-old Lai showed nerves of steel in the biggest match of his young career.

After the match, Christie admitted, “He played with nothing to lose, very calm, no mistakes. I felt the pressure and couldn’t handle it today.” Despite coming so close to his first Indonesia Open crown, the home favorite fell short, vowing to learn from the experience.

Lai, meanwhile, was composed both on and off the court. “I never imagined I’d win a Super 1000 title; it still feels like a dream,” he said. “In Canada, we may not have the same resources as other countries, but if you believe, you can do it.” He credited the growing strength of badminton in Canada and the Pan Am region, hoping his victory will inspire the next generation.

Despite his poise, Lai admitted to battling doubts throughout the final. “There were a lot of nerves, but I just kept my head down and stayed focused. It’s not over until you win that last point.”

Lai’s win is a testament to self-belief and hard work—proof that Canadian badminton is on the rise, and that new dreams are possible for players across the country.
