Lamine Yamal has been released from Spain’s squad for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers after undergoing an unexpected medical procedure, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Tuesday.

The RFEF expressed “surprise and upset” after learning that the 18-year-old Barcelona winger had an invasive radiofrequency treatment for pubic discomfort on Monday — the same day he was due to report for international duty.

According to the federation, the procedure was carried out without notifying Spain’s medical team, who only learned about it later that night through a report.

Given the recommended recovery period of seven to ten days, Yamal has been released from the squad to prioritize his health and recovery.

Spain, unbeaten in Group E, face Georgia on Saturday in Tbilisi before hosting Turkey in Seville on November 18.
