Celebrations erupted across Ecuador as President Daniel Noboa declared a national holiday after the national soccer team stunned Germany with a 2-1 victory to secure a spot in the World Cup knockout round.
“Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite criticism and tough moments, brought this immense joy to the country. Tomorrow, a holiday!” Noboa announced on X, capturing the elation sweeping the nation.
Ecuador’s qualification came after a dramatic final Group E match at a sold-out New York/New Jersey stadium. The South American side rebounded from an early goal by Germany, mounting a spirited comeback to clinch the win. The result was even sweeter after a challenging group stage that saw Ecuador lose to Ivory Coast and draw with Curacao.
With this result, Ecuador advances to the World Cup knockout phase for only the second time in history—the first since their run to the round of 16 in Germany 2006. They progress as one of the tournament’s best eight third-placed teams, while Germany had already secured top spot in the group and Ivory Coast finished second.
The victory sparked nationwide festivities, with fans and players relishing a moment that will be remembered for years to come.
