Japan Open: Yang Upsets Loh, Buhrova Stuns Home Favorite in Thrilling First Round

The opening round of the DAIHATSU Japan Open 2026 delivered drama and surprises, with Brian Yang and Polina Buhrova grabbing the spotlight through impressive victories.

Yang’s Breakthrough Win

Canada’s Brian Yang notched his first win over a top-10 player since January, outlasting Singapore’s world No.13 Loh Kean Yew in a tense three-game battle: 21-17, 18-21, 21-18. Yang, who’s struggled to find consistent form, credited patience and a pressure-free mindset for the upset.

“Of course, we all know that Loh Kean Yew is a really talented player. So coming into today’s match, I think the pressure was more on him, he’s the higher seed, so that kind of helped me win today’s match,” Yang reflected. Admitting recent struggles with confidence, he added, “It’s a big win against a good player, and that’s much needed for me in this time.”

Buhrova Dashes Japanese Hopes

Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova staged a stunning comeback against local favorite Riko Gunji, rallying from 10-15 and 16-19 down in the deciding game to claim victory on her second match point. “I’m really happy that I could fight until the end,” Buhrova said, noting it was challenging to play against the home crowd but satisfying to execute her newly honed skills.

Other Highlights

Thailand’s Hathaithip Mijad/Napapakorn Tungkasatan nearly ousted top seeds Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning after entering the main draw as late replacements.

The morning session saw big upsets, with No.4 seed Jonatan Christie falling to Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul and Ratchanok Intanon losing to Sim Yu Jin.

With more shocks likely ahead, the Japan Open is already shaping up as one of the most unpredictable tournaments of the season.
