Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece remains confident his side can still reach the World Cup knockout stage despite being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Curacao.
The result leaves Ecuador with just one point from their opening two Group E matches after an earlier 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast, putting them in a difficult position ahead of a decisive final group clash against Germany in New Jersey.
Despite the setback, Beccacece insisted Ecuador’s campaign is far from over and urged his players to remain focused on the challenge ahead.
The South Americans dominated large portions of the match and created numerous scoring opportunities but were repeatedly denied by Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room. The veteran shot-stopper delivered a remarkable performance, making 15 saves to earn Player of the Match honours and help Curacao secure a historic point.
Ecuador finished with 28 attempts on goal but could not find a breakthrough, leaving players and coaching staff stunned by the outcome.
Beccacece admitted the result was painful and disappointing but stressed that football can sometimes be difficult to explain. While accepting responsibility for the failure to secure victory, he defended the efforts of his players and believed they deserved far more from the match.
The draw was particularly surprising given Ecuador’s form coming into the tournament. They arrived at the World Cup on a 19-match unbeaten run and had finished second in South American qualifying behind reigning world champions Argentina. They also produced encouraging spells in their opening defeat to Ivory Coast but were unable to turn possession and chances into points.
Now, Ecuador face a daunting challenge against four-time world champions Germany. Victory would likely be required to keep their hopes of reaching the Round of 32 alive.
For Beccacece, however, the message remains clear: Ecuador still have one final opportunity to save their World Cup campaign, and he believes his team must approach the decisive encounter with belief rather than fear.
