The Gresini MotoGP team has revealed a special tribute livery in honour of the late Marco Simoncelli for this weekend’s San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. The livery, a heartfelt homage, replicates the iconic colours Simoncelli raced with the team in 2010 and 2011, when Gresini was sponsored by San Carlo.
Simoncelli, who made his MotoGP debut with Gresini and scored two podiums before his tragic death at the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix, remains a beloved figure in the sport. The Misano World Circuit was renamed in his honour in 2012, making the tribute especially significant for the Italian round.
Alex Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer will run the special colours, unveiled Thursday evening at Misano in the presence of Simoncelli’s father, Paolo Simoncelli, and key figures from the MotoGP paddock, including Carmelo and Carlos Ezpeleta and designer Aldo Drudi.
“Gresini30Seasons returns to Misano, and the tribute was as heartfelt as it was inevitable,” the team stated. “This Sunday, the fairings of Alex Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer’s bikes will pay full tribute to the machine that accompanied Marco Simoncelli during his tragically short MotoGP career.”
Gresini regularly runs special liveries at the San Marino Grand Prix as part of its tradition honouring both Simoncelli and its late founder, Fausto Gresini. This year’s tribute is a highlight of the team’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
