Erling Haaland has called for unity at Manchester City after the club was found guilty of over 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules, potentially facing severe sanctions such as a points deduction or even expulsion from the league.
City, accused of using false commercial contracts to boost revenue and cut costs by more than £900 million between 2009 and 2018, now face an uncertain future. Haaland, who joined in 2022, acknowledged that it’s the current squad who may bear the consequences.
“We have to stay positive, look ahead, and try to win football games,” Haaland told the club’s website. “We have to stick together, enjoy the ride, and smile.”
Despite signing a contract until 2034, Haaland’s future could hinge on the outcome of the case, especially if City are removed from the Premier League or lose Champions League status. The Norwegian striker emphasized his deep connection to the club and its fans, noting, “I care a lot about City… I’m a fan myself—I feel with them as well.”
Manager Enzo Maresca echoed Haaland’s sentiment, urging everyone at the club to remain united and focused on football.
“Personally, I’m very calm,” Maresca said. “We trust the club completely. Our job is to focus on what we can control—the football side.”
City have enjoyed a perfect start to the Premier League season, and Maresca insists the squad is focused and motivated ahead of their upcoming clash with Liverpool, despite the off-field turmoil.
As the investigation continues, both players and staff are determined to keep their attention on performances on the pitch, aiming to maintain their position at the top of the league.
