Tearful Lim You Apologises to Fans After Malaysia’s AFC U-17 Exit

Lim You, Malaysia’s 14-year-old football prodigy, has shared an emotional apology with fans after the Malayan Tigresses fell short of qualifying for next year’s AFC Under-17 Women’s Asian Cup.

Following a 4-0 defeat to India in their final Group E qualifier at Selayang Stadium, Lim You—who caught nationwide attention during the campaign—was seen in tears on the pitch. The US-based winger later turned to social media to thank supporters and express her regret:

“Thank you so much to all of the supporters and people who supported us and encouraged us throughout this campaign. You guys mean so much to me, and I’m so grateful for each and every single one of you. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to give you my best performance last night, and I’m sorry if I let any of you guys down. Thank you.”

Minister Hannah Yeoh attended the match to support the squad and comfort Lim You, praising the team’s determination despite the difficult result:

“The 4-0 defeat to India is truly disheartening. I am sure the players themselves felt it the most, and I was there to offer them my support.”

Yeoh also highlighted the significance of the diverse Malaysian crowd who came out to cheer the young team, calling it “heartwarming” and a testament to the country’s unity.

Reassuring the Malayan Tigresses, Yeoh urged them to keep their spirits high and embrace the experience as part of their growth:

“Don’t lose heart. You are still young and the journey ahead is long. There is a lot to be learned from this experience.”

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing women’s football, especially at the junior level, and encouraged the team to keep striving for success.

Despite earlier wins over Syria and Iraq, Malaysia’s hopes were dashed by the loss to India. Still, the journey of Lim You and the Malayan Tigresses has inspired many, laying the groundwork for a brighter future in women’s football.
