Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has lauded the rapid progress of Kimi Antonelli during the 2026 Formula 1 season, likening the young Italian to an “AI agent that continuously self-improves and learns.”
Antonelli, just 20 years old and in only his second F1 season after being fast-tracked to Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement, has transformed from a rookie with inconsistent results to the current championship leader. After a difficult debut year—marked by a nine-race point drought and struggles at Spa and Monza—Antonelli rebounded impressively following the winter break, coinciding with Mercedes’ return to title contention.
“He came out after the winter, out of the blocks in a way no one saw coming,” Wolff said. “The ability, how he processed last year… it’s in a way that the system has been processed and saved. For me, it’s like an AI agent that continuously self-improves and learns. That’s the speed. Also, his age is for sure beneficial—the ability cognitively, intellectually to constantly become better.”
Antonelli’s commanding victory at Monza, charging from 19th after an engine penalty, exemplified his turnaround. Despite leading the standings by 66 points over team-mate George Russell, Antonelli remains grounded: “I just take race by race because you never know what can happen… I’m going to enjoy this moment and then focus on the next one and then focus on the next one again until the end of the season.”
F1 action resumes this weekend at the new Madring circuit in Madrid, with Antonelli aiming to extend his impressive run.
