Liverpool fought back from a two-goal deficit to edge Villarreal 4-3, keeping their perfect start to the Champions League campaign alive in a pulsating encounter at Anfield.
After falling behind 2-0 in the opening 30 minutes to goals from Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona, the Reds came roaring back. Headers from Alexis Mac Allister and Ronald Araujo off crosses restored parity just before the break.
Mac Allister netted again in the second half—his second of the night—before substitute Florian Wirtz slotted home, completing Liverpool’s remarkable turnaround and ensuring they remain joint leaders at the top of the group with nine points from three games.
“When we’ve been under pressure, we answered well,” said Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola. “But when we relaxed, we were punished. We can’t afford to let our guard down.”
Villarreal, guided by manager Inigo Perez, capitalized on Liverpool’s heavily rotated line-up and an early defensive error from Virgil van Dijk for Mikautadze’s opener. Cardona doubled the advantage with a well-worked goal down the left.
But Liverpool’s resilience shone through as Rio Ngumoha, only 18, made a huge impact off the bench, providing two key assists—one for Araujo’s equalizer and another for Mac Allister’s go-ahead goal.
“He was amazing tonight. He made the difference,” Mac Allister praised Ngumoha.
Wirtz’s first of the season put the Reds 4-2 ahead before Tani Oluwaseyi made it a nervy finish with Villarreal’s third, but Liverpool held on for an electrifying victory.
With this dramatic win, Liverpool move closer to securing a spot in the last 16, while Villarreal are left with just three points from their first three games.
