Lisandro Martinez Stands By Criticism Following Manchester United’s Atletico Defeat

Lisandro Martinez is standing by his outspoken criticism of Manchester United’s leadership following their 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine defender said his remarks were made out of frustration but came from his desire to see the club return to the top.

After the match, Martinez took to Instagram to clarify his comments, which included calls for greater investment in the squad and questions about director of football Jason Wilcox’s recruitment strategy.

“After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted. Those who know me know how I live football—with passion, commitment, and a huge desire to win. My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours,” Martinez explained.

While he acknowledged his emotions, Martinez stopped short of apologizing. He emphasized that responsibility also lies with the players.

“I know that, first and foremost, it’s us, the players, who have to deliver, and I put myself at the front of that responsibility. We need to demand even more of ourselves and work together to take Manchester United back to the top.”

The loss to Atletico extended United’s winless run to five matches, increasing scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick as the club tries to find its footing in the Champions League after two seasons away.

Martinez ended his statement with a show of faith in his teammates and the club’s management:

“I believe in my teammates, our manager, and everyone working to help this club move forward. The way forward is to keep working together, with ambition and commitment.”

Manchester United has yet to publicly comment in response, though reports indicate director Jason Wilcox still has the support of the club’s hierarchy.
