MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez laughed off a television graphic that mistakenly labelled him a “former MotoGP rider” during last weekend’s Formula One Spanish Grand Prix, while insisting a future move into car racing is unlikely.
Marquez attended the race at Barcelona-Catalunya as a guest of Audi and spent time in the team’s pit garage. However, viewers were amused when a broadcast graphic incorrectly identified the reigning MotoGP champion as a former rider despite his recent victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Ducati star first poked fun at the error on social media before joking about it again during the Czech MotoGP pre-race press conference.
Asked whether he might consider switching to four-wheel racing after his motorcycle career, Marquez responded with a smile, referencing the mistake.
“I know that in Formula One it said on the TV graphic ‘former MotoGP rider’,” he joked.
Despite his interest in motorsport beyond MotoGP, Marquez suggested a full-time move into car racing is not part of his plans. The Spaniard has limited experience behind the wheel, although he did sample a Formula One car in 2016 when he and former Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa drove Red Bull machinery during a test day at the Red Bull Ring.
The nine-time world champion has largely focused on two-wheel competition throughout his career, occasionally competing in flat-track events during the MotoGP off-season, but never entering professional car racing.
For now, Marquez remains fully focused on his MotoGP campaign as he heads to Brno looking to build on his breakthrough victory in Hungary and continue his title challenge.
