Slavia Prague Face Arsenal With Unwanted Champions League Record Looming

Slavia Prague are staring down a Champions League nightmare as they prepare to host Arsenal on Wednesday. The Czech champions carry a grim record—just one win in 23 outings—in Europe’s top competition, and risk equalling the all-time winless streak if fortune doesn’t turn.

Pressure Builds as Arsenal Arrive

Slavia’s only Champions League victory came all the way back in September 2007 against Steaua Bucharest. Since that debut, it’s been a string of frustration: eight draws, fourteen losses, and now the threat of matching AEK Athens’ record 24 straight winless matches.

“There’s no hiding from it,” admitted manager Jindrich Trpisovsky. “The longer it gets, the worse it feels.”

The Harsh Reality of Europe’s Elite

Slavia’s woes are compounded by the calibre of their group. After Arsenal, Villarreal and Bayern Munich await—a daunting schedule for any team, let alone one wrestling with a painful drought. Former club star Vladimir Smicer says quality and luck have both played a part. “Slavia face the best teams, and sometimes it just comes down to bad luck or missed opportunities,” Smicer told AFP.

Last time out, Slavia looked set to snap their streak, leading Lens with minutes to play despite being down to ten men, only to lose 3-2 in stoppage time. Such heartbreaks have become all too familiar.

Lessons and Hopes

Defender David Zima has a philosophical outlook, calling the Champions League “a football university.” He insists, “It’s the top level, and you can’t stress about having to win now. Sometimes, you just need a bit of luck.”

For Trpisovsky, everything needs to “click” if Slavia are to shock Arsenal. “We need to give 100 percent, and maybe everything goes our way.”

As November 4 approaches—exactly a year after their home defeat to the Gunners—Slavia hope to finally end their European woes, avoid a dreaded record, and show they can compete with the best. But as history shows, top-level football so often comes down to seizing the right moment—and maybe, just maybe, a little luck.
