Brighton produced a clinical display to thrash 10-man Coventry City 5-0 on Sunday, moving Fabian Hurzeler’s side into fourth place in the Premier League and deepening Coventry’s early-season woes.
Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring in the first half, nodding down Pascal Gross’s pass and firing past Carl Rushworth. Malick Yalcouye doubled the lead soon after halftime, accelerating away from the defence before finishing coolly.
Coventry’s hopes faded further when striker Taiwo Awoniyi was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after elbowing Maxim De Cuyper. Brighton quickly capitalized, with Gross converting a penalty after Bobby Thomas’s foul on Kostoulas. Lewis Dunk then curled a spectacular long-range strike into the top corner, before Yasin Ayari rounded off the rout in stoppage time.
Coventry, still searching for their first Premier League goal since 2001, remain rooted to the bottom without a point after four matches. Manager Frank Lampard admitted: “We have to take responsibility… We did some good stuff, then the game became very, very difficult for us. We have to keep working.”
Brighton, who also routed Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening weekend, climb into the top four with their second win of the season. Hurzeler praised his squad’s flexibility: “Overall we are a team where a lot of players can score goals, and that brings us a lot of flexibility which is good for a coach as well.”
Coventry’s early threat faded as Brighton’s class and Coventry’s discipline told, leaving the Sky Blues still searching for their first point and first goal on their Premier League return.
