Chelsea Smash Transfer Record with £117m Signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa

Chelsea have completed the signing of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a reported £117 million—a fee that sets a new UK transfer record for a British player.

The 23-year-old forward has signed at Stamford Bridge until 2033, and joins after an impressive breakout season with Villa, where he netted 14 goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances and played a key role in their Europa League triumph. Rogers passed his medical on Monday after returning from England’s World Cup campaign in North America.

“For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid,” Rogers said. “I’m really excited about the project, the new manager, the players and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”

The fee eclipses the previous British record set by Manchester City’s £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson, and also breaks Chelsea’s club record previously held by Enzo Fernandez’s £107 million transfer.

Rogers’ transfer is seen as a major statement of intent from Chelsea, who beat Arsenal to his signature despite missing out on Champions League football next season. The move deals a further blow to Aston Villa’s squad following the departures of Youri Tielemans and the expected exit of Lucas Digne.

Middlesbrough will receive 20% of the transfer fee due to a sell-on clause from Rogers’ 2024 move to Villa. Rogers, who is close friends with Cole Palmer from their Manchester City youth days, is also credited with inspiring Palmer’s ‘cold’ celebration.

Chelsea’s new manager Xabi Alonso will now have to integrate Rogers into an attack already stacked with talents like Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, and Geovany Quenda. Rogers will join up with Chelsea after a short break, following his role in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.
