The Los Angeles Clippers have named John S. Gibson as interim CEO and governor, following owner Steve Ballmer’s one-year NBA suspension for salary cap circumvention violations. Gibson, a long-time Clippers season ticketholder and respected Los Angeles attorney, will oversee all basketball and business operations and represent the franchise in league matters.
Ballmer’s suspension, which also included a $30 million fine and the forfeiture of five first-round draft picks, came after an NBA investigation found the team in violation of league rules. Ballmer has stated the fine has been paid and he will not contest the league’s ruling.
Gibson, who spent six years as a trial lawyer and litigation partner at DLA Piper, announced via YouTube that he has formally appointed GM Trent Redden as interim president of basketball operations. “I am honored to take on this responsibility and grateful for the opportunity to serve an organization I have supported for many years,” Gibson said in a statement. “My focus will be on supporting our people, providing steady leadership, and helping the organization continue moving forward.”
Gibson brings experience advising major corporations, sports organizations, and business leaders, and will be tasked with steering the Clippers through this critical period both on and off the court.
