Crutchlow open to future MotoGP testing role

Cal Crutchlow has ruled out a full-time return to MotoGP but admits he could be interested in taking on another test-rider role in the future.

The former LCR Honda race winner came out of retirement this season after team boss Lucio Cecchinello asked him to replace the injured Johann Zarco, who suffered serious knee ligament damage in a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix.

Crutchlow initially rejected the offer before eventually agreeing to step in at Mugello, with support from his family helping influence the decision.

“I’m not doing this to come back to full-time racing. That’s for sure,” Crutchlow said.

“I’m doing it because Lucio asked me to. My wife said, ‘Why not?’ And then I came to the same decision.”

The Briton, who retired from full-time MotoGP competition at the end of 2020, has repeatedly stressed that his latest appearance is a temporary commitment rather than the beginning of a racing comeback.

However, his experience as both a race winner and development rider means he could still have a future in the paddock through testing duties, should the right opportunity arise.

For now, Crutchlow remains focused on helping LCR Honda during Zarco’s absence while continuing to contribute his vast knowledge and experience to MotoGP.
