George Russell Hints at Off-Track Struggles During Landmark 2025 Singapore GP Win

George Russell has revealed that his memorable 2025 Singapore Grand Prix victory was achieved amid unspoken personal challenges, describing his mind as “quite busy” during that special weekend.

The Mercedes driver’s win at Singapore last year marked his second victory of the 2025 season—a much-needed highlight at a circuit where luck hadn’t always been on his side. In 2023, a last-lap crash had cost him a podium finish at Marina Bay.

Russell’s 2026 season, by contrast, has been plagued with misfortune. He crashed out of the Singapore Sprint while leading and salvaged only a ninth-place finish in the main race. He currently sits second in the championship, trailing teammate Kimi Antonelli by 102 points.

In a recent interview with Austria’s Orf Sport, Russell reflected on the unseen pressures he faced during his 2025 win. Shown photos celebrating with partner Carmen Mundt, he said:

“It was a very special weekend because there was a lot going on behind the scenes that not many people know about… Psychologically, my brain was quite busy. Putting it on pole and winning the race was really special, and having Carmen there meant a lot—she was with me through those moments off the track that people don’t see.”

When asked to elaborate, Russell simply replied, “No, one day”—keeping the details private for now.

Despite entering 2026 as a favorite, Russell has encountered a string of setbacks, including multiple engine failures and stiff competition from Antonelli, who is dominating the season with eight wins to Russell’s three. Antonelli could secure the championship at the next race in Austin if he wins and Russell finishes ninth or lower.

Russell acknowledged his disappointment earlier this season, stating after the British Grand Prix:

“It’s super frustrating, you know. Battling against Kimi at the best of times is very tough in a fair fight.”

As the season nears its climax, Russell’s resilience will be tested both on and off the track, as he pursues another shot at the world title.
