Former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui believes pressing Spain may sound simple in theory, but executing it against one of the world’s best possession teams is an entirely different challenge.
Reflecting on Spain’s famous 6-1 win over Argentina in 2018, Lopetegui stressed that Sunday’s World Cup final bears no comparison to that friendly.
“That was a wonderful memory, but this is a World Cup final. They’re completely different matches.”
After watching Spain frustrate France in the semi-finals, Lopetegui said their success lies in both their collective understanding and individual quality.
“Pressing Spain isn’t just about one or two players. You have to close down multiple passing options at the right time, in the right spaces. Their players also have the quality to escape pressure on their own.”
He added that Spain’s calm build-up from the back often turns an opponent’s aggressive press into an opportunity.
“When teams press Spain, they also leave spaces behind. Spain have defenders and a goalkeeper who stay composed and can quickly turn that pressure into attacking opportunities.”
Lopetegui expects Argentina to rely on the movement of their forwards and midfield runners, while noting that Lionel Messi has evolved into a player who not only creates chances but also elevates those around him.
Spain, meanwhile, remain dangerous across the entire pitch.
“It’s not just the forwards who attack—it’s the whole team. And in the same way, the whole team defends.”
Lopetegui believes the World Cup final will ultimately be decided not only by tactics, but by which side handles the pressure and seizes the decisive moments best.
