Tenerife Striker Jesus de Miguel Dies After On-Field Collision

Jesus de Miguel.

Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has tragically died at age 30, just a day after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision during a Spanish Segunda Division match against Andorra.

Tragic Incident on the Pitch

The game was abandoned in stoppage time after De Miguel collided in the chest with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who had rushed out to clear a long ball. De Miguel collapsed immediately after the impact, and players frantically called for medical aid. Medical staff treated him for over five minutes before he was taken to hospital by ambulance, but his life could not be saved.

CD Tenerife, in a statement, described being “racked with pain” and said, “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.”

Owono was shown a straight red card for the collision.

Widespread Mourning and Fixture Postponements

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) postponed all Tuesday matches across Spain, including Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures, in light of the tragedy. The scheduled Under-21 international between Spain and Japan was also called off as a sign of respect.
