Brazil legend Ronaldinho is making a sensational return to football at the age of 46, 11 years after retiring from the professional game.
The 2002 World Cup winner was presented by Italian third-tier club Ravenna, saying he hopes to help the team succeed while chasing what he described as a “beautiful” 300th career goal.
Ronaldinho last played an official match for Fluminense in September 2015, bringing an illustrious career to an end after spells with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan.
“If I could score my 300th goal, that would be even more beautiful.”
The former Ballon d’Or winner admitted it remains unclear whether he will actually feature on the pitch, with the decision ultimately resting with Ravenna’s coach.
Ravenna owner Ignazio Cipriani said Ronaldinho’s involvement is much more than a publicity stunt, describing his comeback as a romantic attempt to score one final goal.
Ronaldinho scored 33 goals in 97 appearances for Brazil and will also become a shareholder in Ravenna as part of his involvement with the club.
However, fans will have to wait to see him in competitive action. Ronaldinho will not play against Reggiana in Ravenna’s Serie C season opener on Monday.
Ravenna finished third in Group B last season and are targeting promotion back to Serie B, where they have not played since 2008.
