Fernandes Hopes Dramatic Roma Comeback Signals Turnaround for Manchester United

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes (R) reacts after scoring their first goal against Roma at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Bruno Fernandes believes Manchester United’s spirited comeback victory over Roma could mark “the start of something good” for a side desperate to revive their season. The Red Devils rallied from 2-0 down at Old Trafford, ultimately winning 3-2 to end a nine-game winless skid and inject new hope into their Champions League campaign.

Fernandes: “This Can Be the Start We Needed”

The Portuguese midfielder began United’s resurgence by converting a penalty—at the second attempt after a Roma encroachment—and Matheus Cunha struck twice in the final ten minutes to cap a stunning turnaround, following earlier losses to Atletico Madrid and Como.

“Fans want to win games. They’ve been used to seeing this club winning trophies…and for them it’s been so frustrating to see the club in this situation,” Fernandes said. “We all want to get out of this and hopefully this win today gives the start of something good for us.”

Addressing Fallout with Carrick

Fernandes also addressed rumors of friction with manager Michael Carrick, calling out “lies” in the media. After previously criticizing tactics following a heavy loss to Como, Fernandes was dropped for subsequent matches but insists he accepts the manager’s decisions.

“It’s been tough, there’s been a lot of speculation in the media, a lot of lies around many things that have happened in this club between me and the manager,” he said. “The manager is the one that makes the decisions, I have to accept them. It doesn’t change the belief I have in the manager and on the staff and every player that is in this club.”

Looking Ahead

Now, Fernandes hopes the drama at Old Trafford will prove to be the turning point for Manchester United as they look to climb out of their recent struggles and deliver more positive results for their expectant fans.
