Honda has released a statement confirming its commitment to participate in the upcoming Qatar MotoGP, despite ongoing regional tensions and controversy surrounding the event.
Race Shrouded in Uncertainty
The status of the Qatar Grand Prix has been uncertain since conflict escalated between Iran, the US, and Israel earlier this year. Although originally postponed in hopes of a stabilizing situation, the race is now just a week away while the geopolitical situation remains volatile.
Riders Voice Concerns
Many riders, expressing safety concerns, recently submitted a letter to series organisers during the Malaysian MotoGP, seeking reconsideration of the event. However, plans for the race to proceed remain in place.
Contrasting Manufacturer Positions
Yamaha announced that it will withdraw from the Qatar event due to company travel restrictions for the Middle East. In contrast, Honda HRC issued the following brief statement:
“Honda HRC will compete in Round 20 of the MotoGP World Championship held in Qatar. We have been working closely with the riders, our team members, and MotoGPSEG to ensure the weekend goes ahead.”
The statement did not offer further details regarding safety or travel plans, reflecting a cautious but committed stance.
Possible Penalties and Ongoing Concerns
MotoGP officials have warned Yamaha of potential sporting penalties for non-participation, while the FIM—responsible for enforcing sanctions—has not yet commented. Meanwhile, Yamaha’s Pramac Moto2 team and its rider Izan Guevara will compete as planned.
Despite lingering uncertainties, Honda’s affirmation adds clarity to the grid for the Lusail event as MotoGP prepares for a controversial and tense race weekend in Qatar.
