Liverpool Collapse to Dramatic Champions League Defeat at Fenerbahce

Liverpool fell to a 3-2 defeat against Fenerbahce in Istanbul, as the Turkish side twice came from behind to claim a famous Champions League win under interim boss Dirk Kuyt—a former Anfield favorite.

Missed Opportunity and Defensive Lapses

Despite leading twice through Trey Nyoni and Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s defense faltered at key moments, allowing Mason Greenwood and Archie Brown to equalize before Vedat Muriqi sealed the comeback with a late header. The loss prevented Liverpool from drawing level with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the table.

Manager Andoni Iraola, who had rotated his lineup following their weekend defeat at Arsenal, lamented the soft goals conceded:

“We’ve gone twice in front… we’ve found the goals but after we’ve conceded in situations we should definitely defend better,” he said.

Fenerbahce’s Revival

Kuyt, taking charge for only the second time after Ismail Kartal’s resignation, guided Fenerbahce to a much-needed boost after just two points from their opening three Champions League matches. Their win lifts them to 19th in the 36-team table, keeping their knockout hopes alive.

Wild Finish in Istanbul

Liverpool’s substitutions—bringing on Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Cody Gakpo—yielded an instant impact, with Isak heading Liverpool ahead again. But defensive uncertainty cost the visitors, as Brown tapped in after a Gakpo deflection and Muriqi outmuscled his marker for the winner.

Looking Ahead

Despite defeat, Liverpool maintain a solid position in the group. Isak reflected:

“Today if we lose this game it’s not a chaos situation… if we win the next game, we are back to a really good position.”

With only the top eight advancing directly to the last 16 and ninth through 24th facing play-offs, Liverpool still has everything to play for in their Champions League campaign.
