Liverpool have secured the season-long loan signing of Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo from Spanish champions Barcelona, aiming to reinforce their backline amid a spate of injuries.
The deal, confirmed on Monday, reportedly includes an option to buy the 27-year-old centre-back for around £47 million ($63.5 million). Araujo’s arrival comes at a crucial time, with Liverpool facing mounting defensive shortages: Joe Gomez is sidelined with a muscle injury, Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL injury, and Jeremy Jacquet is also out, leaving veteran Virgil van Dijk as the club’s only fully fit senior centre-back.
Araujo expressed enthusiasm for the move: “I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.”
Liverpool will hope Araujo’s presence stabilizes their defence as they prepare for the new Premier League season.
